Essential Oil of the Month
The essential oil for May is Lemon (Citrus Limon).
- PLANT is an evergreen tree, native to Asia, but grows abundantly in Mediterranean.
- EXTRACTED by expression from the outer pith of the fruit.
- SMELL is light & fresh citrus.
Uses in Aromatherapy
Lemon oil has good antiseptic / bactericidal / diuretic properties making it useful for the following:
- Skin: Acne & spots, brittle nails, sore throat, greasy skin, insect bites
- Circulation & Muscles Arthritis, cellulite, poor circulation, rheumatism
- Immune System: Colds, flu, fever & infections
Scent Your House
After our very long winter, lemon oil is ideal to bring fresher, lighter smells into our houses. This can be easily done using an inexpensive ceramic oil burner (don't forget to add water too). Try the following combination: 8 drops of lemon oil with 4 drops of mandarin / grapefruit & 2 drops of rosemary oil.
Note: All citrus oils, to a lesser or greater degree, can make the skin photosensitive, meaning they may cause the skin to discolour or burn if exposed to direct sunlight. However once the oil is fully assimilated into the body this effect disappears. Never use ANY essential oil neat on the skin, as they are highly concentrated essences & need to be diluted in vegetable oil or other oily medium, i.e. lotion or cream, before applying them to the skin.
Vegetable Oil of the Month
Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima) is the vegetable oil for May.
Avocado oil is a mild, nourishing, semi fatty oil, rich in vitamins E, D and B5, as well as Lecithin and betacarotene.
- It is used on dry, mature skin or skin that is tired and lacks lustre.
- The oil is quickly and easily absorbed. Its therapeutic merits include treating rheumatism and in alleviating menopausal symptoms.
- Look out for avocado (persea gratissima) as an ingredient in suncreams and lotions, it has a natural sun protection factor (SPF) 2 to 3. It is particularly good when combined with vitamin E oil (tocopherol) to promote healing and soothing sunburnt skin.
- Look out for persea gratissima in face creams. Because of its fatty acid composition, it offers protection against weather and wind and its helps keep moisture in the skin by stopping transepidermal water loss.
Tip: Once every 1 to 2 weeks, massage 1 teaspoon of warmed avocado oil into the scalp and hair. Wrap the hair in a warm towel for 20 mins, then shampoo and condition as normal. It will make your hair fabulously shiny. You can obtain small amounts (usually 50 mls) from good health food shops and some chemist shops. Or check out my online suppliers.
